Hudson County-based Health System Looks Forward to Improving Patient Care, Deepening Community Involvement Under New Non-Profit Organization

Jersey City, NJ – Members of the State Health Planning Board voted today in favor of CarePoint Health System’s pending Certificate of Need applications, officially approving its transition to a non-profit entity focused on improving patient care. The board vote follows a staff recommendation by the New Jersey Department of Health that supported CarePoint’s applications.

“Today’s decision by the State Health Planning Board will have a transformative impact not just on CarePoint Health, but on Hudson County and the surrounding region as a whole,” said President and CEO of CarePoint Health, Achintya Moulick, MD, MBA, M.Ch. “With our non- profit structure now fully in place, CarePoint Health will have access to critical financial support from the state and federal governments, as well as reduced costs and access to charitable fundraising contributions — all of which will make our hospitals stronger and more financially solvent. This is a wonderful day for Hudson County and I would like to thank all of the elected officials, community leaders, physicians, hospital residents and fellows and health care leaders who provided overwhelming support for our cause and helped make this momentous decision possible.”

Numerous Hudson County elected officials, medical professionals and community leaders have shown their overwhelming support for CarePoint Health System’s transition to a nonprofit
organization. Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop and Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis both spoke in favor at the State Health Planning Board meeting in Trenton today. Other elected and appointed leaders who have offered their strong support to CarePoint include members of the Jersey City, Bayonne and Hoboken City Councils, state legislators, community leaders and more.

CarePoint’s three safety net hospitals care for a population that is 80% African American and Hispanic, with a high percentage of uninsured and Medicaid patients, especially at Christ Hospital and Hoboken University Medical Center, where they make up approximately 60% of the current patient mix. The transition to nonprofit control opens up a wide array of funding and grant opportunities to support Hudson County’s underserved patients moving forward that are also not otherwise available under for profit status.

CarePoint Health has made major strides in bringing quality healthcare to the people in Northern New Jersey. In the past two years CarePoint has gained national recognition as the No. 1 ranked hospital for equitable care in the US by the prestigious Lown Institute and 4th ranked safety net hospital by Washington Journal. It has also announced partnerships with national leaders in healthcare delivery like Columbia University.
