Being well-informed about your birth options can help provide the experience you and your family desire. We encourage you to think about how you want to bring your baby into the world, to discuss your wishes with your practitioner, and to create a birth plan. When you choose to have a baby in our Family Birth Unit, your options include:
Having a natural delivery. Some women choose to give birth using no medications, instead relying on relaxation and breathing to relieve pain. We have birth balls, as well as other support mechanisms, available for pain management. You may also bring your own birth ball or anything that will help relieve pain.
Pain management during labor. The pain women experience during labor ranges widely from woman to woman and even from pregnancy to pregnancy. You may choose to use medications to manage your labor pain. A variety of medications are available to you at any time.
Nitrous oxide for pain management. Women who use nitrous oxide during labor may still have an awareness of labor pain. However, many women find it helps them relax and decreases their perception of labor pain.
Doulas are welcome. You may want to have a doula assist, guide and support you through the stages of labor. We welcome these birthing partners.
Water labor and water birth. This option is available at Hoboken University Medical Center. It allows you to labor and give birth in a special tub filled with warm water. The use of a tub during labor helps ease pain, may keep you from needing anesthesia and may speed up your labor.
Gentle c-section. We now offer women who are having a c-section the choice of having a gentle or family-centered c-section. The care team (the obstetrician, anesthesiologist and nurses) make the c-section experience in the operating room as similar as possible to the labor and delivery room. The sterile drape is lowered so mom and partner can see the baby being born. Immediately after delivery mom can hold, bond with and even nurse her baby.
