I am dedicated to using cutting edge surgical technology to optimize patient outcomes and enhance recovery through the advantages of minimally invasive surgery, including smaller incisions and less scarring, less post-operative pain, decreased time spent in the hospital, and early return to work and normal daily activities.
Dr. Patel was born and raised locally, in nearby Staten Island, NY. After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Boston University in 2005, he attended St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies, where he received his M.D. degree in 2010. He then went on to complete a five-year general surgery residency at the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine, one the nation’s leading medical centers. Following residency, he devoted a year to research, focusing on clinical outcomes for patients undergoing minimally invasive surgery, as well as enhancing surgical trainee education and skills training through novel simulation at NorthShore University Health Systems, in Evanston, IL. During this time he authored several articles on minimally invasive foregut and hernia surgery outcomes for peer-reviewed journals, presented his work at national meetings, co-authored texts, and helped develop a simulation based curriculum for general surgery trainees and medical students.
In 2016, Dr. Patel received further fellowship training in advanced laparoscopic and robot techniques used in general and bariatric surgery at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA. During his fellowship, he performed a large volume of laparoscopic and robotic operations for the treatment of diaphragmatic hernias (hiatal and paraesophageal); complex diseases of the stomach and esophagus (achalasia, gastroesophageal reflux, gastric ulcers, and stomach tumors); morbid obesity (gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and revisional bariatric surgery); and all types of abdominal wall hernias (epigastric, umbilical, ventral incisional, inguinal and femoral).
Dr. Patel is board certified by the American Board of Surgery (ABS), and a member the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) and the American Medical Association.
Above all else, Dr. Patel focuses on each person as an individual—making sure every patient who comes to see him understands what’s going on with them and is offered the best treatment options available.
